Inside the book

Little Dot the duck is dry and fluffy. Splash! She jumps in the pond, and now she is wet. The sun comes out, and Dot is dry again. Frog splashes in too, and Dot rubs him dry with her striped towel. A rain cloud soaks Sheep, so Sheep gives a big shake. Then the rain comes for everyone, and at sunset the three friends hug on the towel, warm and dry.

A rain cloud pours on Sheep while Dot and Frog stay under a red umbrella, in Wet Duck, Dry Duck.

The new words in this book

wet

Covered with water and dripping. It comes up 7 times, and every time a friend on the page splashes into the pond or stands under a rain cloud, then drips real little water drops.

dry

No water on it, warm and fluffy. It comes up 8 times, and every time a friend dries off in the sun, with a towel or with a big shake, and turns fluffy again.

Made for children just starting kindergarten: one sentence per page, three to six words. One pattern comes back and only one word changes: “Splash! Dot is wet.” / “Sun! Dot is dry.”, then Frog, then Sheep. Every other word is one a four-year-old already knows: sun, rain, splash, frog, sheep, hug.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the splashes and the rain. The whole book takes about a minute and a half.
  • Join in with the pattern: after two pages, let your child say the last word — “wet!” or “dry!”
  • Act it out: shake like Sheep, rub like a towel, and hold your hands up to the sun.
  • Play it for real at bath time or after washing hands: touch a wet hand and a dry towel and say the words: “Wet! Dry!”
