Inside the book

Princess Lin has a rod and a net, and she wants a fish. Splash! She gets a big red fish with a gold crown. “Let me go and you can have a wish,” says Fish. “I wish for a snack!” Plop! A giant snack lands in the pond. “I wish for a ship!” Splash! A big pink ship. “I wish for a pet frog!” Hop! Hop! Ten frogs! Frogs on the ship, frogs in the snack, a frog on Lin — what a mess. But Fish is sad. So Lin makes her best wish of all.

The new words in this book

fish

An animal that swims in water. It comes up 10 times, and every time the big red magic Fish is right there on the page — in the net, on the dock, leaping back into the pond.

wish

To hope for something and ask for it. It comes up 6 times, and every wish swirls gold sparkles across the page. Wish rhymes with fish: only the first letter changes, so a child who can read one can read the other.

A Level 3 decodable reader: a child who knows short-vowel words (red, pet, ten, mess), blends and digraphs (frog, snack, splash, ship, fish), -s endings and the first sight words (this, she, said, what, have, are) can read every word in this book by themself — we check it with our reading ladder. The pattern “I wish for a …!” said Lin. comes back three times with one word changing, so by the fourth page your child knows what comes next.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1Who is this? What does she have in her hands?
  2. 2What did Lin catch? What colour is it?
  3. 3What does Fish say? What would you wish for?
  4. 4What did Lin wish for? Is it a little snack or a big snack?
  5. 5What came out of the pond? What colour is the ship?
  6. 6Lin wished for one frog. How many frogs came? Count them!
  7. 7Where are the frogs? Can you find the frog on Lin?
  8. 8How does Fish feel? What does Fish want?
  9. 9Tap a frog: hop, plop, back in the pond! What is Lin’s best wish?
  10. 10Where is Fish now? Are Lin and Fish friends?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and let your child enjoy the joke of ten frogs.
  • Second time: switch to I can read and let your child read it. Every word is one they can sound out or already know by sight.
  • Write fish and wish on paper and cover the first letter: what is left? (ish!) Try d + ish too.
  • Take turns: “I wish for a …!” Each of you picks a wish, and the other acts out what pops up.
