Inside the book

A big blue hat sits on top of the haystack. Pig hops to the top and grabs it, and the hat flops right over Pig’s eyes. Oh no! Pig can not see! Bop! Pig bumps into a pot, and the pot lands on top of Pig’s head. Then Cat, Dog and Fox jump into the upside-down hat. They all fit! Pig can not fit in… so at sunset Pig sits on top of everyone. Ta-da!

At sunset, Pig sits on top of Cat, Dog and Fox in the big blue hat in Pig’s Big Hat.

The new words in this book

fit

Small enough to go inside. It comes up 8 times, and every time something really goes into the big hat: Cat, Dog, Fox, a little chick and a ball — and Pig, who is too big.

top

The highest part, up on something. It comes up 5 times: the hat on top of the haystack, Pig on top of the haystack, a pot on top of Pig, and Pig sitting on top of all the friends in the hat.

Made for children who are just starting to sound out words. On our reading ladder this is a Level 1 book: a child who knows short-vowel words with a, i and o (cat, sit, hop) and ten first sight words (a, I, the, see, is, to, go, my, can, and) can read 99% of the words alone. The only harder word is “no”. Each sentence has 3 to 6 words and is shown on its own, and the pattern repeats on the same page as the friends jump in one by one: “Cat can fit in the hat.” / “Dog can fit in the hat.” — so after one read with you, many children can read it back to you.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1What is on top of the haystack? Can you hop to the top like Pig?
  2. 2Can Pig see? Where are Pig’s eyes?
  3. 3Bop! What landed on top of Pig?
  4. 4Who fits in the hat? Count the friends! Why can’t Pig fit in?
  5. 5Tap a pal. Can it fit in the hat?
  6. 6Where does Pig sit at the end? Say “Ta-da!”

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the jokes together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Second time: switch to I can read and let your child sound out each word: h-a-t, hat. Almost every word works this way.
  • Point to the picture before the new word: “Does Cat fit? Yes, Cat can fit!”
  • On the tapping page, let your child say “Fit!” every time a friend jumps into the hat.
