Inside the book

Rain! Pepper the puppy wants to go out and splash. Quick, quick, she pulls on her red boots, but they are on the wrong feet, and she wobbles, wobbles, oops! Mama helps: left paw, left boot. Right paw, right boot. Then a yellow mitten on each paw. Out in the garden it goes left, right, left, right, splash! At sunset the kitten joins in too.

Puppy Pepper stands at the front door: left paw, left boot on, and the right boot is next, in Left Paw, Right Paw.

The new words in this book

left

The side of your left hand. It comes up 9 times, and every time something on the left of the page moves: Pepper’s left boot or mitten goes on, she hops into the left puddle, and a red spot glows on the floor on the left.

right

The side of your right hand. It comes up 9 times: the right boot and mitten go on, Pepper splashes in the right puddle, and a blue spot glows on the right.

Made for children just starting kindergarten, when putting on your own shoes is a big new job. Each sentence is short (3 to 6 words) and shows up on its own, acted out on the page, in one pattern: “Left paw, left boot.” / “Right paw, right boot.” Only one word changes, so a child can say it with you by the mitten page. Pepper faces the front door with her back to the reader, so her left paw is on the child’s left, the same as their own. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like rain, boot, paw, quick and splash.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1Look at the door: what is it doing outside? Pepper is in a hurry. Are her boots on the right feet? Why does she wobble?
  2. 2Hold up your left hand. Which boot goes on Pepper’s left paw? Now your right hand! Where does the right boot go?
  3. 3Wiggle your left thumb. Where is Pepper’s left mitten? Clap your right hand on your knee. Is Pepper ready now?
  4. 4March with Pepper: left, right, left, right. Where is the big puddle?
  5. 5Tap something on the left. Now something on the right!
  6. 6Who is splashing with Pepper at the end?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Sit side by side with your child, both facing the screen, so your left hands point the same way as Pepper’s.
  • Before you go out, play “left shoe, right shoe” at the door, just like Pepper.
  • On the garden page, let your child say “Left!” or “Right!” before each tap.
