The new words in this book

in

Going inside, like down into a hole. It comes up 6 times, and every time someone really drops down into a hole: Momo, the mole, the little bird, and all the friends in the hole game.

out

Coming from inside to the outside, like up out of a hole. It comes up 7 times: Momo peeks out and hops out, the mole and the bird pop out, Momo pulls a carrot out of the soil, and the friends pop out in the game.

Made for children just starting kindergarten. The page shows one short sentence at a time (3 to 6 words) in one pattern, and Momo acts each one out right there on the same spread: “Momo hops out.” / “Momo hops in.” Only one word changes, so a child can say it with you by the second spread. Every other word is one a 4-year-old already knows, like bird, hole, carrot, pop and night.

Questions to ask while you read

Pause after each spread and ask one question. There are no right answers; the point is to get your child talking.

  1. 1Where is Momo? Can you see her ears? Now she hops out… and in! Can you hop like Momo?
  2. 2Who pops out of the little hill? Where did the mole go? Say “in!”
  3. 3Where is the little bird hopping? Is the bird in the hole or out of the hole now?
  4. 4What does Momo pull out of the soil?
  5. 5Tap a hole. Who pops out? Now tap again: in!
  6. 6Where does Momo sleep at night?

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the pictures together. It takes about a minute and a half.
  • Act the words: crouch down small on “in”, jump up tall on “out”.
  • Read it again and pause before the last word of each page, so your child can say “in” or “out”.
  • On the hole game, let your child say “Out!” before each tap and “In!” when the friend drops back down.
