Inside the book

Little Rusty the red car is clean and shiny. Splash! He zooms into a mud puddle, and now he is dirty. At the car wash, Robot scrubs him with a big brush, and Rusty is clean again. Tractor splashes in the mud too, and Robot sprays him clean with the hose. Then Rusty splashes Robot by mistake, so a cloud of bubbles washes Robot clean. One last big puddle makes everyone dirty, and at night, under the stars, all three friends are clean and shining.

The new words in this book

clean

No mud on it, shiny and bright. It comes up 8 times, and every time a friend is scrubbed, sprayed or bubbled and comes out shining with a sparkle.

dirty

Covered with mud, all brown and messy. It comes up 7 times, and every time a friend splashes through a mud puddle and real brown mud flies and drips.

Made for children just starting kindergarten: one sentence per page, three to six words. One pattern comes back and only one word changes: “Splash! Rusty is dirty.” / “Scrub, scrub! Rusty is clean.”, then Tractor, then Robot. Every other word is one a four-year-old already knows: splash, scrub, spray, bubbles, tractor, robot, stars.

Tips for parents

  • First time: use Read to me and just enjoy the mud and the bubbles. The whole book takes about a minute and a half.
  • Join in with the pattern: after two pages, let your child say the last word — “dirty!” or “clean!”
  • Act it out: zoom like Rusty, scrub like Robot’s brush, and pop the bubbles with a finger.
  • Play it for real at bath time or after playing outside: look at muddy hands, wash them, and say the words: “Dirty! Clean!”
